Vidant Medical Center

 Vidant Medical Center is an 861-bed general medical and surgical hospital in Greenville, NC. It's the flagship medical center of Vidant Health, which serves more than 2 million people in the 29 rural counties in eastern North Carolina.

 It serves as a primary teaching hospital for East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine.

  Vidant's campus includes The Leo Jenkins Cancer Center, The East Carolina Heart Institute and The James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant is the only pediatric hospital in eastern North Carolina. A new six-story, 96-bed Vidant Cancer Center is under construction and is scheduled to open in 2018.

 In an average year at Vidant, about 44,500 inpatients and more than 171,000 outpatients are treated, and more than 3,500 babies are born, according to the medical center's website.

  • Vidant is the largest employer in Greenville and the 20th overall in the state.
  • It serves as a primary teaching hospital for East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine.
  • It's a Level 1 trauma center, one of six in North Carolina.
  • Vidant's fleet of EastCare helicopters provide emergency medical flights to the hospital from throughout the region.
  • Vidant is the only primary stroke center east of Interstate 95.
  • The first successful procedure in the United States using the robotic Da Vinci Surgical System was performed at Vidant by East Carolina University surgeon Randolph Chitwood. It was the second such procedure in the world.
  • Vidant's Gamma Knife system to treat brain cancer is one of only two in the state.
  • The first floor of the James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital includes a Ronald McDonald suite for overnight stays for patients' families.
